I was invited to contribute a small piece for Everything’s Fine‘s Rosa Redux, an anthology of essays from female writers in Southeast Asia written in response to Rosa Luxemburg’s letters. I’m so thankful to Katrina for letting me write about my mother, who is no legendary feminist and activist icon like Rosa, yet, for me, mirrors the lives of generations of Vietnamese women. This piece, too, is a piece for Hà Tĩnh. A hometown that was given to me as my birthright. A place I tried to detach from during my adolescent years, but have recently started to feel more connected to. Maybe it’s the chill I feel in my spine each time I come back to visit, knowing that my mother is getting older and weaker every day. That soon, I will no longer have a reason to come back.
