Hypnotising Chickens began as a set of individual attempts to connect and trace points of convergence—and divergence—between artists engaging with the moving image across two seemingly unrelated cultural contexts: Tasmania (Australia) and Vietnam. The curatorial framework was deliberately pragmatic: selecting works made between 2019 and 2024 that reflect a range of formal and conceptual approaches to the medium. The result is a constellation of 12 works—each with its own rhythm, pace, and genre—brought together in a single, continuous projection. The exhibition space is designed as a dark, enclosed environment in which the audience is seated before a singular source of light that is largerthanthou—echoing the spatial and affective conditions of a cinema. Yet unlike a theatre, this space allows viewers to enter and exit at will, as they often do with video work in exhibitions, though at the cost of missing the unfolding rhythm of the full sequence. Spanning performance documentation, animation, experimental short film, found footage essay, and music video, the selection gestures toward the porous boundaries of the medium itself. But which medium are we speaking of? Cinema? Experimental film? Video art?
